What is wrong with my R/C truck's ESC? Please Help!!!?

I have a Traxxas Stampede. My esc is an XL-1 forward/reverse. Whenever I run it, the esc gets so hot that you can't touch it. I ran it earlier today and all of a sudden I no longer had reverse. My battery is an Intellect 3600 MaH. My motor is a Trinity Speed Gems Pro Amber 17T double motor. Is this all too high for the XL-1 esc? Should I switch it to my XL-5 or would that just do the same thing?
